Housing Support for People with Disabilities and Mental Ill-Health in Western Sydney
Finding the right home is a big decision for people with disability and mental health needs, and for the families who support them. This guide answers the questions we hear most often.
Thorndale Foundation has supported people with disability in Western Sydney since 1959. We provide disability housing support in Western Sydney through Supported Independent Living, SDA homes and short-term accommodation.
Can I Get Housing Support That Meets My Needs?
Possibly. Housing support is set out in your NDIS plan and based on your individual needs and goals, rather than on a diagnosis alone.
If a disability or mental health condition affects your daily living, you can raise housing at your plan review. You can check eligibility on the NDIS website.
Our team can also explain what to ask for, so you feel prepared before your review. Contact Thorndale to talk through your situation.
What Housing Options Can I Choose From?
Thorndale offers three types of housing support. Each suits different needs, goals and NDIS plans.
Supported Independent Living (SIL)
SIL funds the support workers in a shared home. Each Thorndale home accommodates three to five residents, with 24-hour support as required.
Support covers daily tasks, personal care and building life skills over time. Read our guide to SIL for more detail.
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
SDA funds the building, not the support. Several of our homes are SDA housing in Western Sydney, designed for high physical support or full accessibility.
Many participants receive SDA and SIL together. SDA covers the home itself, while SIL covers the day-to-day support delivered inside it.
Short-term Accommodation and Respite
NDIS short-term accommodation can be overnight, for a weekend or longer. It gives you a break from home and a chance to meet new friends.
It is also a good way to build skills and test the waters towards full independence. It is funded under Core Supports.
What If I Already Have an NDIS Plan?
Check whether housing support, such as SIL or SDA funding, is already included in your plan. If it is, you can start talking to providers about available homes.
If it is not, ask for a plan review and raise your housing goals. Our NDIS team can help with SIL funding requests on (02) 9912 7800.
Are There Any Housing Vacancies Right Now?
Yes. Three Thorndale homes currently have vacancies, each in a different setting. Availability changes regularly, so please confirm by phone before making plans.

How Do I Find a Provider That Is Right for Me?
The right provider is one that listens to your goals and respects your choices. These steps help you compare options with confidence.
- Review your NDIS plan for housing and SIL funding
- Talk to your planner about your housing goals
- Shortlist providers and check they are NDIS registered
- Arrange a home visit and meet the team
A visit shows you how a home feels and how staff work with residents. Take your time, and visit more than one provider if you can.
What Questions Can I Ask Housing Providers?
About the Home
How many housemates live there, and what are the house rules? Ask what the shared spaces and your own room are like.
About the Support
How many staff are on site, and how is support tailored to me? Ask how the team adjusts support as your needs change.
About Moving In
Can I visit first, and what does the transition plan involve? Ask how long settling in usually takes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is housing support for people with disability?
It is NDIS-funded support that helps a person live in a safe, suitable home. It can cover the building, daily support from workers, or both.
Can people with mental health needs get NDIS housing support?
Support is based on the needs in your NDIS plan. If a condition affects your daily living, raise it at your plan review, or contact us to discuss.
Accordion panel 5
SDA funds the building and its accessibility features. SIL funds the support workers and daily assistance inside the home. Many participants receive both.
Can you have SIL without SDA?
Yes. They are funded separately, so you can receive SIL without SDA funding. SDA only applies if your plan includes funding for specialist housing.
How do I start looking for a SIL home in Western Sydney?
Review your NDIS plan, talk to your planner, then contact Thorndale to discuss vacancies, arrange a home tour and plan your move.
